Department of Agribusiness

The Department of Agribusiness is the leading provider of Agribusiness graduates within Western Australia. Agribusiness covers all businesses associated with production of food and fibre products. Agribusiness organisations provide inputs and services to agricultural industries such as: marketing organisations, financial institutions, farm lobby groups, research and development, agricultural consultants, exporters, fertiliser suppliers, machinery suppliers, merchandise suppliers and rural media companies. More broadly it includes all involved in getting food and fibre products from the raw ingredients (seed, fertiliser etc) to a consumer’s plate or wardrobe (paddock to plate). The agribusiness supply/value chain includes raw material providers, primary producers, transport providers, food and fibre processors, wholesalers, distributors, retailers and fast food providers. Our teaching and research encompass all aspects of agricultural production, processing, marketing and distribution. This includes food and fibre production, supply chain management, agricultural finance and trade, agribusiness/farm management, agri-marketing, and rural development.

Agribusiness degrees are a combination of commerce and technical agricultural units, taught within a systems framework. Seven majors within our Agribusiness degree program are offered:

Agribusiness Marketing focuses on agricultural technology and marketing;Farm Management provides business management training particularly as it relates to commercial farming; Equine Management provides students with agribusiness management and marketing education, combined with technical training in principles of equine science, equine health, nutrition and breeding; Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources provides business management training with aquaculture production or aquatic resources management; Horticultural Management includes biology of plants, management of horticultural crops, business management, business planning and marketing aspects of horticulture. Viticultural Management combines agribusiness management and marketing with the technical principles of viticulture, grape and wine production and wine evaluation.

All courses provide grounding in technical and agribusiness units. Students are required to spend 12 weeks gaining professional practice working with an agribusiness organisation anywhere in the world. Graduates are keenly sought by companies servicing the agriculture and primary industry sector, including marketing organisations, financial sector institutions and technical advisory services.
